Aims
The English Language Curriculum aims at:
- developing students’ confidence and competence in communicating through English
- providing an interesting and authentic learning environment for students
- empowering students’ self-directed learning abilities
|
Overview
Our English Language Curriculum is learner-centered. We emphasize the use of English for communicative purposes and offer a lot of exposure and learning opportunities both inside and outside classrooms.
|
Teaching Strategies:
- Phonics skills taught explicitly
- Promote self-directed learning by engaging students in their own learning process (e.g. show and tell, role-plays, presentations, etc.)
- Use multisensory approaches (e.g. games, songs, etc.)
- Provide ample opportunities for quality exposure and meaningful application from listening and reading to speaking and writing in different contexts
- Nurture generic skills by designing different activities such as pair work and group work
- Promote peer and self-assessment
|
Reading to Learn:
- P.1-3: Involve the native English speaking teacher (NET) and local English teachers to work collaboratively to develop students’ English Language abilities through Primary Literacy Programme – Reading and Writing (PLP-R/W)
- P.4-6: Incorporate reading workshops into the school-based English Language curriculum and reading skills are taught explicitly
- Launch regular reading activities (e.g. School-based Reading across the Curriculum Programme, Home-Reading Programme, etc.)
- Promote e-Reading platforms (e.g. Kids A-Z, Epic)
- Use a wide spectrum of reading materials to enhance students’ exposure
|
e-Learning:
- Empower pedagogy by using e-Learning in pre-lesson, in-lesson and post-lesson stages
(e.g. Quizlet, Nearpod, Padlet, Edpuzzle, Kahoot, etc.)
|
Creating a Language-rich Environment:
- Launch thematic activities (e.g. Story Alive, Spelling Bee, Talent Quest, etc.)
- Incorporate English Language learning into extra-curricular activities (e.g. Drama Team, English Debate Team)
|
Catering for Learner Diversity:
- Launch enrichment programmes to extend the more able students
- Launch intervention programmes to provide timely support for students who have difficulties
|
